On January 17, 2013, The Korea Society will feature Han TeRra, one of the most noted kayagum (gayageum) players, from Korea. The presentation will focus on the role of
the kayagum and traditional dance with Chosun (Joseon) Period courtesan culture. In addition to the musical performances, Dr.
Robert Province will provide insight into the historical background for each
piece.
The Chosun Kingdom in Korea encompassed the extensive time span of 1392
through 1910. A courtesan class of women was maintained during the time period
known as the kisaeng or skilled women.
As one of their sole responsibilities
was to entertain the nobility, kisaeng were provided extensive training in all
areas of the arts, from a very young age. As a result the kisaeng maintained a
key role in preserving and developing the arts in Korea.
Korean drama fans will recognize
the kayagum as the instrument is often featured in the Sageuk genre of Korean
drama. The kayagum was also a key component in the 2011 drama, Heartstrings,
in which actress Park Shin Hye portrayed a traditional music student and
kayagum prodigy.
